Jaw Surgery Before and After
Maxillofacial surgery is a relatively recent medical-surgical specialty. It treats all pathology that may appear in both the face and neck.
This ranges from congenital craniofacial deformities to those that are acquired due to trauma. Therefore, in maxillofacial surgery operations before and after the treatment of a deformity the patient changes a lot.
We cannot forget all the oncological pathology or cancers that appear in the face and neck. It also includes all surgery performed inside the mouth from a wisdom tooth to any type of tumor.
The vast majority of these pathologies are treated in the context of public medicine in Mexico, not in US.
However, some dento-skeletal deformities, although they have very important functional implications, appear in the dental offices of orthodontists and maxillofacial surgeons.
The aim of orthognathic or orthofacial surgery is to reposition the maxilla and mandible in an ideal position that allows us to recover the masticatory, phonatory and respiratory functions and at the same time pursues the esthetic ideal.
That is why it is so important to see cases of maxillofacial surgery where you can see the before and after the intervention.
Who should be operated?
These patients may present a whole range of alterations:
- They bite badly from the front: the incisors do not occlude correctly, they have an open bite, but their problem is not in the position of the incisors but in the bony bases that support them and in the acquired altered habits.
- In general, orthognathic surgery is necessary when there is a difficulty to bite correctly when the jaw is too far back.
- When the jaw protrudes downwards or is very elongated.
- When the maxilla is too far forward and can give us a bird-like profile.
- In some cases when the smile shows a large amount of gum.
- When it is difficult to close the lips without contracting the muscles around the mouth.
- When breathing through the mouth and the lips are therefore very dry.
- In sleep apnea in severe stages.
In many of these cases orthodontics alone does not solve the problem. It can align the teeth, but the bones are still in a bad position and functional and esthetic alterations persist.
The fundamental objective between before and after orthognathic maxillofacial surgery is to restore both function and facial harmony.
How am I going to look?
In all cases where there is an open bite, i.e. the front teeth do not contact, a good bite is achieved in all areas.
In cases where the maxilla is advanced or has a great height, a harmonization of the facial profile is achieved and both arches coincide.
Similarly, if the jaw is very large, it can be repositioned by moving the upper jaw forward if necessary, and shortening its height by means of a mentoplasty.
