Having healthy teeth is not only important for esthetics, but also for correct occlusion and functionality.

There are people who, for various reasons, have lost all their teeth, a condition known as edentulism.

For this type of patient, the best solution is to place dental implants in the entire mouth.

In this article, we explain the procedures and dental prostheses that make it possible to recover all the teeth.

You will also find out the price of dental implants for the whole mouth.

Prosthesis to recover all teeth

The advances made in recent years in the field of Implantology have focused, above all, on offering increasingly more precise and long-lasting treatments for the patient.

For this reason, it is now possible to choose between two methods so that the person can recover the functionality and esthetics of their teeth.

Both types of prostheses require the placement of dental implants throughout the mouth, as they are responsible for holding them in place and allowing the patient to speak and chew normally.

We speak, on the one hand, of the hybrid prosthesis and the overdenture on the other.

This type of dental prosthesis is indicated for people who are completely edentulous, but also for those who, even if they keep some teeth, cannot keep them.

However, we would like to mention a third option that we do not recommend as much as the ones we have just mentioned: the complete denture.

Commonly known as dentures, this is a removable appliance that includes the teeth, gum and palate.

As it does not have implants to secure it, since it rests solely on the patient’s mucosa, it is difficult to speak and eat with it.

In addition, it requires the use of special adhesives for prosthesis and does not prevent bone loss.

It is possible to place dental implants for the whole mouth by means of a hybrid prosthesis or an overdenture.

Hybrid prosthesis

Hybrid prostheses are fixed structures that are screwed over several dental implants previously placed.

They not only replace missing teeth but, if necessary, they also replace the soft tissue – gum – that has been lost.

The fact that they do not include an artificial palate provides a sense of security and comfort for the patient, as they function exactly the same as a real denture.

Hybrid prostheses are made of titanium and are covered with porcelain (which imitates natural teeth) and a light-curing microceramic composite resin that provides the aesthetics of the gum.

Overdenture on implants

The overdenture is a type of semi-fixed prosthesis that is also supported by dental implants.

It has, therefore, the advantage of the permanent support offered by implants, but also the convenience of being removable for easier cleaning.

The system used to place it in the mouth is called locator, with male and female.

Like the hybrid prosthesis, it can also replace the gum if required by the patient, and offers a very natural result.

It is made of resin and a metallic cobalt-chrome reinforcement in its base to prevent it from breaking and provide strength.

Full mouth rehabilitation with dental implants for the whole mouth

Now that you know that it is possible to replace the entire set of teeth and recover full functionality, we will explain the procedure for placing dental implants in the entire mouth.

This complete rehabilitation is performed when all the pieces of an arch, upper or lower, are missing.

Thanks to hybrid prostheses and dentures, it is not necessary to place an implant for each missing tooth.

In these cases of edentulism, between 4 and 5 implants are placed in the lower arch and 6 in the upper arch.

Twelve crowns per arch are placed on these titanium screws to complete the entire denture.

Traditionally, the only solution for patients who were completely edentulous was the use of a complete prosthesis (denture).

Although it is currently possible to resort to it, it is an outdated technique that has been replaced by a superior support system: the hybrid prosthesis and the overdenture.

Phases of treatment to restore teeth

Whether by means of a hybrid prosthesis or an overdenture, the placement of dental implants in the whole mouth requires certain steps to ensure optimal and quality results.

1 – Case study

It is crucial that an expert in implantology is in charge of assessing your case.

For this reason, at DrAW Clinic we do not have general dentists, but rather each doctor specializes in a specific area of dentistry.

Our implantologists will be in charge of studying your oral health and determine if it is possible to carry out the rehabilitation or if any previous treatment is necessary.

Thanks to the use of a 3D CT scanner, the doctor obtains an accurate and reliable diagnosis.

2 – Taking impressions of the mouth

To make the prosthesis to measure, it is necessary to take impressions of the patient’s oral cavity.

For your convenience, this is done using an intraoral scanner that recreates a reliable virtual color recreation.

Friendly advice: Don’t forget your check-ups

It is advisable to go at least twice a year if you have dental implants in the whole mouth.

3 – Intervention and placement of the implants

If the patient does not keep any teeth, the implants are placed by means of a surgery that does not cause pain, as it is done under anesthesia.

4- Healing stage and definitive prosthesis

To ensure the success of the treatment, it is essential that the implants osseointegrate – heal and fuse with the bone – properly.

This process takes about 3 months, during which time the patient wears a temporary prosthesis.

Is it possible to recover all the teeth in one day?

Thanks to advances in dental technology, it is now possible to reduce the time between the placement of the implant and the crown – or in this case, the prosthesis – to just a few hours.

If the extraction of a natural tooth is necessary, because the patient does not have total edentulism but, as we have said, it is a tooth that cannot be maintained, the possibility of resorting to immediate loading can be considered.

This technique allows dental extraction and implant placement in the same session.

In addition, the crown or provisional prosthesis is also placed, so that the esthetics of the smile and functionality are not affected.

It is common for immediate loading to be combined with another technique known as computer-guided surgery.

This is a method that gives great precision to the implantologist, since it has a custom-made splint that indicates the exact point where the implant is to be placed.

In this way, stitches are avoided, since no incision is required in the gum, and the postoperative period is simpler for the patient.

However, it must be taken into account that in order to apply the immediate loading technique, a series of requirements must be met by the patient:

  • Have sufficient bone mass and not need a bone graft.
  • Not suffering from periodontal diseases -gingivitis and periodontitis-.
  • Maintain exhaustive daily oral hygiene routines.
  • Not being a bruxist.
